A man shot by police in Newark on Monday evening, Aug. 12 is in critical but stable condition, authorities said. At 8:34 p.m., two Newark police officers spotted a stolen SUV in the area of Clinton Place near Hawthorne Avenue, the state Attorney General's Office said. Police approached the vehicle and a struggle ensued between a man in the driver's seat, authorities said. A man wanted for a shooting in Newark on the morning of Wednesday, March 20, is at large, police said. At 7 a.m., Newark police responded to the 100 block of West Runyon Street and found a man had fired a handgun toward Hawthorne Avenue, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé said. No injuries were reported, though police recovered a .9 mm shell casing at the scene, Fragé said. Police are hoping to use surveillance footage to help identify the suspect, Fragé said. Authorities ID Driver Killed In Newark Crash With NJ Transit Bus
A 33-year-old woman died and several others were injured in a crash between a vehicle and NJ Transit bus early Tuesday in Newark, authorities said. The Bloomfield-bound bus was struck head-on by a westbound 2007 Chevy Impala while going east on Hawthorne Avenue near Clinton Place around 5:30 a.m., NJ Transit spokesman Jim Smith said. Paige N. Sanitation Worker Critical In Newark Hit-Run Crash
A sanitation worker was hospitalized in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday evening in Newark. The man was collecting trash for an independent company when he was struck by a white Lincoln near the intersection of Hawthorne and Goodwin avenues around 11:30 p.m., Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said. The driver fled the scene and the victim was taken to University Hospital. Authorities were searching for the driver as of Thursday morning.

Authorities in Newark are on the lookout for a silver SUV they say was targeted in an armed carjacking Monday afternoon. A man exiting a 2004 Cadillac Escalade was approached by an armed man who demanded money near the 300 block of Hawthorne Avenue around 11:45 a.m., Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said. The armed man then sped off in the victim’s vehicle, heading west on Hawthorne Avenue, Ambrose said. Newark Man Faces Aggravated Assault Charge In Shooting
A 23-year-old man has been charged in a Newark shooting that left one person injured earlier this month, authorities said Friday. City resident Jamil F. Brown, 23, is accused of shooting a man near Wolcott Terrace and Hawthorne Avenue around 7:45 p.m., Oct. 1, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said. The victim was treated for his injuries at Newark Beth Israel Hospital, Ambrose said. Brown was arrested Oct. 2 and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

1 Dead, 1 Extricated In Overnight Newark Crash
One person died and another was extricated in an overnight Newark crash, authorities confirmed Saturday morning. The male was pronounced dead at the scene of Hawthorne Avenue and Irvine Turner Boulevard around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, a spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. A second victim was extricated and the street was closed for investigation. Identification of the male killed was pending notification to the family, authorities said. This is a developing story. Five Injured In Newark Police Pursuit Crash
A Newark police pursuit ended in a multi-vehicle crash that injured a carjacker, two police officers and two civilian before dawn Monday, responders said. All five were taken to University Medical Center after the chase ended in a chain-reaction collision at Hawthorne and Chadwick avenues shortly after 2:30 a.m., they said. A 6-year-old who was sleeping in the back of a running car when it was stolen is OK after the vehicle was found within minutes in Newark, police said. A woman left a 2018 Honda Accord idling when she went to drop off a package in East Orange around 10 p.m. Thursday. A thief jumped inside the car and took off, police said. Possibly after realizing there was a child in the car, the thief abandoned it a few blocks away at Hawthorne Avenue and South 20th Street in Newark. The suspect was seen running down Fabyan Place.
