Hoboken Street Fight Stabbing Was Self-Defense, Attorney For Lyndhurst Man Says
UPDATE: A Lyndhurst man was defending himself when he stabbed a North Bergen man who attacked him in Hoboken, his lawyer told a judge in Jersey City on Tuesday. "It's self defense, clear self defense," attorney Adam Lustberg of Hackensack said after the judge released Andre Mateus, 26, with conditions following a Zoom hearing. The trouble began at the Tally-Ho bar at the south end of Washington Avenue on Sept. 28. 'Coward': Family Of Woman, 19, Killed In Car In Hackensack Speaks Out
The family of a 19-year-old Bloomingdale woman coming to terms with her sudden death was also trying to come up with money for her funeral. More than $1,200 had been raised as of Nov. 15 on a GoFundMe launched by relatives of Francis Veronica Garcia. "My sister's life was suddenly shortened by a coward leaving us with a deep sorrow," page founder Luis Banegas said, who put funds toward his sister's funeral. Michael Gaffney, 21, of Maywood, was arrested and charged with reckless manslaughter following an autopsy on Garcia, who'd been with him at a party in a Hackensack high-rise apartment …

Gaffney sought help from friends soon after, but state Superior Court Judge Margaret Foti couldn't understand why Snapchatting a photo of Garcia's body in the backseat of the car Nov. 2 was his first reaction. Gaffney's actions that fateful night beg the question: If the Snapchat wasn't sent and help was gotten sooner, would Garcia be alive today? "I do find it curious that when a woma…

Hackensack Barber, 31, Tried Luring Girl, 13, Into His Car, Authorities Charge
A 31-year-old barber from Hackensack was taken into custody after he tried luring a 13-year-old girl into his car, authorities said. Luis Farias was arrested on June 4 after Hackensack police were told that he tried talking the girl into his vehicle "for the purpose of engaging the juvenile in a sexual act," Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said. A judge ordered Farias released on Monday, pending a first appearance on luring and child endangerment charges, following a detention hearing. He'd spent five days in the Bergen County Jail. "Mr. Farias has been a law-abiding business owner i…
