The fire broke out at 220-222 Neptune Ave. around 4:45 a.m., when temperatures were in the low 20s. Three other nearby structures were also threatened by the fire but the damage was largely contained to the one house, fire officials said.

A Jersey City police sergeant noticed the fire and called it in, then she and other police officers led occupants to safety, the spokeswoman said. Two police officers were being treated for smoke inhalation but there were no other reports of injuries.

WPIX 11 quoted a fire official Wednesday morning who said the blaze may be suspicious and that a "person of interest" was being questioned.

Seven families totaling 25 people were affected by the fire, the city also said.
