At 4:45 p.m., police responded to 11 Van Nostrand Avenue and discovered Darryl Colbourne had used the samurai sword to slash a 24-year-old in the right hand, left chest, left ear and left side of his head, Kimberly Wallace-Scalfione, a spokeswoman for the mayor's office said. The incident began as a verbal dispute and the two men knew each other, Wallace-Scalfione said.
Colbourne was hit with multiple weapons charges and also charged with assault, Wallace-Scalfione said.
