A tax preparer from New Jersey has admitted to orchestrating a nearly $6 million fraud scheme through his Westchester County, NY businesses that involved filing thousands of returns containing fabricated deductions and credits, federal prosecutors said.
Bergen County resident Joseph Clay, age 52, of Lodi, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to aiding and assisting in the preparation of a false and fraudulent federal income tax return, the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York announced on Thursday, Oct. 1.

A 57-year-old New Jersey man surrendered to police after gunshots were reported and heard near a home on Thursday morning, Oct. 1, authorities said.
Kearny police were called to a residence on Webster Avenue around 9:16 a.m. after a 911 caller reported shots fired, police said. As officers took positions near the home, another gunshot was heard, authorities said.

A dump truck driver has been charged with vehicular homicide months after a Route 23 crash killed a beloved local EMT and mother and seriously injured two others, authorities said.
Sebastian Zapata, 36, of Sussex, was arrested on Monday, Sept. 21, following an investigation into the June 18 crash at Route 23 and Mabie Street in Franklin Borough, police said.
