During his time writing for newspapers, magazines, and online publications, he’s covered everything from murderers to mommy bloggers, but his most interesting story is always the next one.

Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday, Aug. 6.  The 60-year-old Walz was a seemingly late entrant to the "veepstakes" but gained popularity after several media appearances went viral.  The chair of the Democratic Governor's Association, Walz was a US Congressman from 2007 to 2019. A former high school social studies teacher, he's served 24 years in the Army National Guard. Big Lots To Close Hundreds More Stores, Including Several In Massachusetts It's more bad news for discount retailer Big Lots. The nationwide chain announced in June that it would close 40 stores following dismal sales and rising costs, but in a new filing last week, the company said it may need to shutter nearly 300 locations — several of them in the Northeast.  Big Lots announced in a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Friday, Aug. 2, that under an updated term sheet, the company would need to close 20 percent of its 1,392 stores — about 290 in all.  Here are some of the local closures. Body Found Behind Springfield Park The body of a man was found behind a park in Springfield on Monday morning, Aug. 5.  The man was found around 10:10 a.m. in a wooded area behind Blunt Park. Officers were called to the area to find the body. The man's name was not released.  Police did not disclose the cause of death or if it appeared he was the victim of an attack.  Springfield police are investigating the man's death.

71-Year-Old West Wareham Man Killed In Four-Car Middleborough Crash On I-495 A 71-year-old man was killed on Friday, Aug. 2, in a four-vehicle wreck that began when a tractor-trailer crashed into traffic as it slowed down, authorities said.  Police were called to the crash around 11:30 a.m. on I-495 near Exit 12. A preliminary investigation found the tractor-trailer — for reasons unknown — slammed into the back of three vehicles, including a GMC Terrain being driven by a 71-year-old West Wareham man, State police said.  Paramedics rushed the man to an area hospital, but doctors could not save his life. Mansfield Man Killed In Wrentham Crash A 50-year-old Mansfield man was killed on Friday, Aug. 2, in a two-car crash in Wrentham.  Troopers were called to the wreck on Route 1 when a 2014 Mercedes CLA sedan traveling north on Route 1 attempted to make an abrupt U-turn from the center lane, State police said. The sedan slammed into a car in the left lane.  Paramedics rushed the driver of the Mercedes to an area hospital, where he died of his injuries.  Authorities have not released his name as they notify his next of kin. The driver in the second car was not injured.  Police closed a portion of the road …

Beagle Left Nearly Dead On Western Mass Roadside; Police Looking For Truck That Abandoned Her A beagle nicknamed Bagel was abandoned on a Hampshire County roadside last month, suffering from a battery of severe health problems and covered in feces. Police are now asking for the public's help to find the person who left her there.  Bagel was dropped off near a Tractor Supply Company in Belchertown on July 2. The 2-year-old was covered in excrement, had mange, a double ear inflection, cheery eyes, and infections in her paws. She had also had puppies at some point. Jackpot!: $1M Lottery Ticket Sold In Newton One Bay Stater had a life-changing moment on Saturday, Aug. 3, when they correctly guessed the numbers in a multi-state lottery and won $1 million.  The winner purchased a Powerball ticket in Newton and got all five drawn numbers right, but they missed the Powerball, which would have netted them more than $174 million.  The winning numbers were: 13, 33, 40, 60, and 61, with the Powerball being 20.  The winner's name has not been released.  The winning ticket was purchased at Quik Stop at 293 Watertown St. in Newton.
