A historic funeral home dubbed Belleville's "town jewel" is facing demolition. Built in 1887, the Cozzarelli Memorial Home is one of the town's last surviving historical structures, and was featured in "The Sopranos," as Tony mourned his mom's loss. A violent ex-con from Carlstadt who spent several years in state prison for robbing a group of tourists at knifepoint assaulted Little Ferry police at their headquarters over the weekend, authorities said. Scott Recanati, 50, had gone there Saturday afternoon, Sept. 24, to complain about a victim whom he was under a court order not to contact, Police Chief James Walters said. A River Vale man surrendered to Hillsdale police on Friday after clobbering a former roommate with an expandable baton during a fight at a local liquor store, authorities said. Bartello Merlino, 45, and the victim already had a contentious history when they ran into each other at the Bottle King on Washington Avenue early Thursday night, Police Capt. Sean Smith said. Police Respond To Gunfire In Asbury Park
Police responded to a report of shots fired in Monmouth County. Shots reportedly were fired early Thursday afternoon near Washington Avenue, according to initial reports. Police were on the lookout for a silver Toyota that was in the area at the time of the shooting. Multiple shooters were believed to be inside the Toyota, according to an unconfirmed report.
