On Saturday morning, family members gathered in front of The Outpost in Bedford Village to promote their new dog-food brand, which is known as Heelers. The gathering included tastings offered to several canines that came by.
Father Alex Amoriello recalled the difficult in getting the family's dog, an Australian Cattle Dog named Buster, to eat. Daughters Alexa and Sabrina started making their own food for buster, which in turn led to exploring organic ingredients.
Heelers includes beef and chicken varieties, Amoriello said. Other ingredients include sweet potatoes, green beans, hard-boiled eggs, rolled oats and olive oil. Several family members came up with the ideas for including the ingredients.
Amoriello also credited Outpost's John Ubaldo, who helped to procure the organic ingredients, which come from across New York State.
Aside from selling jars of dog food at Outpost, Amoriello noted that people can sign up on Heelers' website and become "members" to get a fixed amount on a monthly basis. Sales at farmers' markets are also planned, Amoriello said.
