Yonkers Hosts Federico Memorial Softball Tourney

YONKERS, N.Y. – Yonkers native Christian Federico was a standout athlete, an honor student and an inspiration to many of his peers before he died suddenly three years ago, but his legacy has grown and continues to support young people in his community and in Yonkers where he was born an spent his early years.

A star football and baseball player at Ossining High School, Federico graduated in 2008 and went on to attend the University of Maryland, where he died suddenly while jogging on April 30, 2010.

On July 28, Federico’s family and friends will host the Third Annual Christian Federico Memorial Softball Tournament in his honor, raising funds for a scholarship established in his memory. The event will be held at Redmond Field on Cook Avenue in Yonkers from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Christian's father Lou Federico, who coached his son at Ossining, was a standout athlete at Roosevelt High School in Yonkers from 1967 to 1970 and worked for the City of Yonkers.

“Christian always wanted to go to a rah-rah college from the time he was young and he got his wish,” said his mother Luanne Federico at last year's event, which drew more than 200 players and friends. “He was a good young man, a good athlete and good student. He did everything the right way. We are so proud of him.”

The event will feature a tournament, men’s and women’s games, a picnic and raffles that will offer prizes contributed by businesses throughout the county, including tickets to New York Yankees baseball games.

Those interested in fielding a team for the event or in contributing to the fundraising effort can call Vic Federico at 914-815-7552. There is also a Facebook page named “In Memory of Christian Federico.” Contributions may also be sent to the fund at 2 Butler Place, Ossining, N.Y. 10562.
