WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Local football fans will enjoy an unusual midweek start of the National Football League season Wednesday when the New York Giants host the Dallas Cowboys at Met Life Stadium in a nationally televised game at 8:30 p.m. on NBC-TV.

While the defending Super Bowl Champion Giants get a head start on the rest of the NFL, the Jets, who failed the make the playoffs last year, will host the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at 1 p.m. on CBS-TV.

Westchester fans will be following the careers of two local players who are currently playing in the NFL; New Rochelle's Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens and Yonkers native Doug Hogue of the Detroit Lions, who is a graduate of Roosevelt High School.

Rice, who set rushing records for New Rochelle High School and went on to do the same at Rutgers University, is the lead running back for the Ravens, who open their season hosting the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football at 7 p.m. on ESPN. Rice led the Ravens in rushing last year with 1,364 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Hogue, who played at Syracuse University, is in his second year as a linebacker for the Detroit Lions, who host the St. Louis Rams Sunday at 1 p.m. The 23-year-old Hogue was a Lions fifth round draft pick in 2011.
