YONKERS, N.Y. Police suspect a New York City man accused of stockpiling a variety of weapons and ammunition may not have used Yonkers as his only hideout.
Yonkers detectives were in the Bronx Sunday in what police said was a spin-off of an investigation into a collection of weapons found in a storage room at 22 Alder St. last week.
Det. Lt. Patrick McCormack, spokesman for the Yonkers Police Department, said the detectives search was related to the Alder Street investigation but declined to say what, if anything, was found.
The search is part of an investigation into Antonio Olmeda, the man police suspect of storing numerous handguns, rifles, high-capacity magazines and approximately 5,000 rounds of ammunition in the home at 22 Alder St.
Police said they discovered the stash Wednesday after reports of a suspicious package. Yonkers police said a New York City Police Department identification card and police department badges also were recovered in the home, along with numerous military-type smoke canisters.
Three days later, Yonkers police joined federal agents and members of the Westchester County bomb squad in the search of an abandoned van that allegedly was registered in Olmedas name and parked in a lot on Van Cortlandt Park Avenue. A bomb-sniffing dog initially indicated there may be explosives in the van but a later search came up empty.
McCormack said Yonkers police have yet to file any charges against Olemda, who remains jailed in New York Citys Rikers Island on attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting two NYPD officers in December.
