Two sub-contractors received severe burns after being exposed to a chemical at a Westchester bakery, according to the Yonkers Fire Department.

The incident took place around 10:40 a.m., Friday, with two sub-contractors performing work at the bakery receiving burns at the Greyston Bakery at 104 Alexander St. in Yonkers, according to Yonkers Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Fitzpatrick.

Arriving firefighters were told there was some type of chemical explosion that burned the two workers said Assistant Chief Edward Cucolo.

Upon further investigation, firefighters found the two workers were using a solvent based contact cement in a confined area lacking the proper ventilation. There was a flash explosion causing severe burns to the two workers, Cucolo said.

Both were transported by empress ambulance to The Westchester County Medical Center.

The explosion caused a high heat and smoke condition in the area and caused some combustible materials to ignite and smolder. Units on scene extinguished the fire and spent several minutes ventilating the thick acrid smoke, he added.

Fire investigation and the police detective division are investigating the incident.
