YONKERS, N.Y. A two-alarm fire displaced residents in two apartments and caused significant damage to a two-story building on Kimball Avenue in Yonkers early Saturday, Deputy Fire Chief John Flynn said.
The building, which houses a medical office on its ground floor, sustained severe fire, smoke and water damage but is salvageable, Flynn said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Several people reported smoke coming from a building on McLean Avenue around 2:42 a.m., which ignited confusion and delayed firefighting efforts, Flynn said. When firefighters arrived at the Kimball Avenue building, they saw flames from the ground floor to 10 feet above the roof, Flynn said.
Forty-nine firefighters battled the blaze until 3:22 a.m., putting holes in the roof and pulling apart walls to find the fire, Flynn said.
The occupants of the two upstairs apartments were already out of the building and unharmed by the time firefighters arrived, Flynn said. One firefighter sustained a minor injury.
