YONKERS, N.Y. Yonkers was in cleanup mode Wednesday after heavy winds and sheets of rain swept through the region Tuesday night.
A storm that knocked out power for thousands and left countless trees scattered around the Hudson Valley didn't spare Yonkers on its way through the area. About 12 locations in the city were reported to have either downed wires or trees, Yonkers police spokesman Detective Lt. Patrick McCormack said.
No injuries were reported, however, and by Wednesday morning, all roads were open.
It is more of a clean up at this point, McCormack said.
At Royal Coach Bus Lines Inc., 1010 Nepperhan Ave., workers were assessing the damage after an uprooted tree crashed through the roof of two school buses and damaged a third. Two buses, which can cost as much as $100,000 each, were destroyed, company executives said.
Welcome to our nightmare, terminal manager Doreen Rubin said, standing near a pile of crumpled metal and shattered glass. I've never seen anything like this.
Nearly 175 city residents were still without power Wednesday after more than 500 were left in the dark Tuesday night, including an estimated 400 in the Ludlow neighborhood. A majority of the outages were repaired by midnight, and Con Edison was expected to restore all power by 11 p.m.
"Our goal is get everybody their power back in the whole county. Obviously, if trees are down and wires are down, it takes a little longer," Con Edison spokesman Chris Overt told The Greenburgh Daily Voice on Tuesday night.
