Saturday is the federal Drug Enforcement Administration’s nationwide Prescription Drug Collection Day and Westchester County is collecting medications at the Household Material Recovery Facility from 10a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, on the Grasslands Campus at 15 Woods Road in Valhalla, according to a news release.

"Step away from the toilet, please don’t flush those meds or throw them down the drain," representatives said in the release. "A method for proper collection is essential for a healthy environment, as drugs and medications can taint our local rivers and streams if not handled properly."

The county’s Department of Public Safety and County Executive Rob Astorino’s office recently recruited several local police departments to host MedReturn units, according to the release.

"Westchester’s Med Take-Back Program provides residents an opportunity to safely, conveniently, and confidentially dispose of medications at over 20 local municipal police departments," representatives said in the release. "Funding for the units was provided by the County’s Department of Environmental Facilities, the Westchester County Coalition for Drug & Alcohol Free Youth, and other local coalitions."

Residents can bring unwanted prescription drugs to one of the participating police departments at any time, according to the release, or can drop off the items worthy of special handling at the Household Material Recovery Facility on the first Tuesday of each month. Appointments can be made by calling the Westchester County Recycling Helpline at 914- 813-5425.
