Yankees Bernie Williams Serves Jazz In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. – Former New York Yankees great Bernie Williams and a lineup of top jazz musicians delivered an evening of sweet summer music Monday at Westchester's Ridge Hill Mall in Yonkers to a crowd of nearly 2,000 fans.

“It’s hot, very hot,” Williams told the audience crowded together on the mall between Lord & Taylor, Bed, Bath and Beyond and the Cheesecake Factory before beginning a 90-minute set. “It’s great to be here in Yonkers. Thanks for all your support over the years and with my music.”

Williams and his mates treated the audience to several of his original tunes as well as a mix of rock, jazz and blues standards, including John Lennon’s “Imagine” and Williams’ personal jazz rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” for a finale that thrilled the crowd.

“It amazing to be up here playing with these great musicians, I’m blessed,” Williams said. “I spent so many bus trips with the Yankees playing guitar and keeping my teammates awake over the years. To have the chance to play music and have such great support is truly amazing.”

Yonkers resident Ray Benitez and his family sat in lawn chairs and took in the concert   performed by the longtime baseball hero.

"I've been a Bernie fan since he came up with the Yankees," Benitez said. "I knew he played guitar, but this group is really great. Great jazz by a great guy."

The concert was part of a summer series presented by Ridge Hill and local radio station WFAS-FM. The four remaining concerts are: “Oh What a Night!” - a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons cover band - on July 27; Brass Transit, a Chicago tribute band, on Aug. 8; and You Can Close Your Eyes performing the hits of James Taylor on Aug. 15.
