What's Happening This Week In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. – A Labor Day run and downtown sidewalk sales are among the things happening in Yonkers this week. Check out our calendar listings for more events.

Monday Sept. 3:

Labor Day Giveaway: Head to the Empire City Casino, where the first 10,000 Empire Club Members to visit a promotions kiosk will receive a coupon for one free polka dot bag. Coupon can be redeemed at the promotions table near the Entertainment Lounge. Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway, 810 Yonkers Ave.

Labor Day Trail Run: 9 a.m. Take part in the 6.5-mile trail run in Van Cortlandt Park, based on the tradition of the holiday marathons. No registration, no fees, no timing, no prizes, no food, no water and no trail markings. Van Cortlandt Park, the Bronx, 6087 Broadway. Meet near the Tortoise and Hare Statue.

Tuesday, Sept. 4

Knitting & Crocheting Workshop: 10 a.m. Learn the basic fundamentals of knitting and crocheting in this 90-minute workshop. No experience necessary. Riverfront Branch, Yonkers Public Library, 1 Larking Center.

Wednesday, Sept. 5

UFO Roundtable: 6 p.m. Discussion of the 2012 crop circles season continues. Special guest will be Alan Steinfeld of New Realities TV. Yonkers Public Library, Will Branch, 1500 Central Park Ave.

Riverfront Book Club: “The House I Loved” by Tatiana de Rosnay: 1 p.m. The monthly book discussion continues. Led by librarian Jody Maier, the book to be discussed will be “The House I Loved” by Tatiana de Rosnay. Light refreshments served. Riverfront Branch, Yonkers Public Library, 1 Larking Center.

Landmarks Preservation Board: 7 p.m. Among other things, the board will discuss the landmark status of three residential properties, all on Buena Vista Avenue. Ceremonial Court Room, fourth Floor City Hall, 40 South Broadway.

Thursday, Sept. 6:

Downtown Sidewalk Sales: All day. Yonkers downtown sidewalk sales are back. From Thursday through Sunday, merchants will set up shop on sidewalks around the downtown district. Sponsored by the Yonkers Downtown Business Improvement District.  

First Day of School: All day. Yonkers Public Schools opens its door for the first day of school for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Thursday also is half-day orientation for Prekindergarten students.  

Riverfront Library 10th Birthday: 3 p.m. Celebrate the Yonkers Public Library’s Riverfront Branch’s 10th anniversary by creating a birthday card. Children and teens welcome. Riverfront Branch, Yonkers Public Library, 1 Larking Center.
