Monday, Sept. 24
America Reads: 3:30 p.m. Student volunteers from Sarah Lawrence College will be at the Yonkers Public Library Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, where they will read with children ages 5-12. Yonkers Riverfront Library, 1 Larkin Center.
One Puzzle Piece at a Time: 10 a.m. A meeting for parents of special needs children. Yonkers Riverfront Library, 1 Larkin Center.
Tuesday, Sept. 25
Knitting and Crocheting Workshop: 10 a.m. Learn the basics of knitting and crocheting or resume knitting after a long layoff by reviewing the fundamentals. Yonkers Riverfront Library, 1 Larkin Center.
REI Map and Compass Navigation Basics: 7 p.m. An in-store class where you'll learn basic navigation skills: the parts of a compass, how to read a topographic map and how to use them in tandem. You'll learn how to plan routes, pinpoint your location through triangulation and then navigate to new locations by following a bearing. Maps and compasses are provided in the hands-on class, but bring your own if you prefer. REI, Westchester Ridge Hill, 1 Ridge Hill Road.
Wednesday, Sept. 26
City Council Meeting: 8 p.m. The council will discuss and vote on a number of resolutions, including approving the appointment of Robert Sweeny as fire commissioner of the Yonkers Fire Department and the Columbus Day celebration. City Hall, 40 South Broadway.
Yonkers Public Schools Closed: All Day. Schools will be closed in observance of Yom Kippur.
Peacekeepers: 6:30 p.m. A meeting of community leaders that is part of a larger, Community Action Plan initiative designed to help keep the peace in communities that are plagued by crime and gun violence. Nepperhan Community Center, 342 Warburton Ave.
Music and Merriment: 10 a.m. Interactive stories and songs for children ages 1-4. No registration required. Yonkers Crestwood Library, 16 Thompson St.
Thursday, Sept. 27
Board of Contract and Supply: 10:30 a.m. The board, which deals with the handing out of city contracts, will have its monthly meeting. Mayor's Reception Room, City Hall, 40 South Broadway.
Zumba Party: 7:30 p.m. Join Zumba Fitness for a Latin-inspired dance party and workout routine. No experience needed. For rates and location, RSVP online.
Its M*A*G*I*C Acting Workshop: 4 p.m. Learn skills from the storytelling and acting troupe. You also can sharpen the talents you will use for the teen talent show set for Nov. 10. You must register to be part on It's M*A*G*I*C. Yonkers Riverfront Library, 1 Larkin Center.
