Show Off Your Kite-Flying Skills At Hudson River Museum In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. – Watch kites soar in the Yonkers sky during the Kite Festival on Saturday at the Hudson River Museum from noon to 5 p.m.

Outdoor events are free; all indoor programs, artist-lead workshops and tours are free with museum admission.

Billy Echevarria and Leucio Parrella from Kites in Motion, a kite club who also judge kite contests with members of the American Kiteflyers Association, will be on hand. Outdoor activities include a kite contests with categories for children and adults to win prizes, a scavenger hunt and music performed by Solar Scientist Alan Bigelow and the Solar Punch Band.

This is the schedule of outdoor events:

  • Battle of the Kites: 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.
  • Highest Angle Kite (youth and adult): 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.
  • 50-yard Dash (Kids only): 2 and 4 p.m.
  • Most Unusual Kite (youth and adult, handmade or purchased): 4:30 p.m.
  • Music: Solar Punch Band from 2:30 – 4 p.m.

Indoors, visitors make newspaper kites in workshops from 1-4 p.m. Meet artist inflatable artist Jimmy Kuehnle, whose bright, bouncy balloon art is on view June 4– Sept. 18. See him walk around in his towering inflatable suit, The Walking Fish. Food trucks will provide refreshments for the day.

A rain date will take place on Sunday in case of inclement weather. The Kite Festival is part of the Yonkers Arts Weekend.

Admission to the Hudson River Museum is $6 for adults, $3 for youth 3 -18, $4 for seniors 62 and over and students with ID. Planetarium admission is $4 for adults, $2 for youth 3-18 and $3 for seniors 62 and over and students with ID.
