Golden Gloves Boxers To Square Off In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. – A group of the area’s best amateur boxers will slug it out in Yonkers Wednesday for a chance at a championship.

The New York Daily News’ storied Golden Gloves boxing tournament will return to the Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway, with the first bell set to sound off at 7:30 p.m.   A total of 10 bouts will be held on the casino’s fourth floor, headlined by four championship fights.

Included in the title bouts is Christella Cepeda, representing the Yonkers YMCA. Cepeda will take on Berenis Machal, from Brooklyn, at the 132-pound level as she shoots for her second straight gold in the tournament. 

Wednesday marks the third consecutive year the iconic Daily News Golden Gloves tournament, now in its 86th year, has made a stop at Empire City Casino.  Former participants in the country's oldest amateur boxing event include the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson, Floyd Patterson and Riddick Bowe.

Doors will open at 6:15. Seating is limited and tickets will be sold at the door on a first-come, first-serve basis. General admission is $25 or $15 for police officers, firefighters, senior citizens, students and children under 14.
