YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers, hoping to speed up the transformation of a former mill into a shopping and dining destination, is weighing a zoning change that would allow retail outfits and restaurants, according to a report by lohud.

The former Alexander Smith Carpet Mills on Nepperhan Avenue in Yonkers, part of a complex of warehouses and other buildings, could be transformed into a shopping and dining destination under a re-zoning proposal.

YOHO Artist Studios on Nepperhan Avenue, part of the proposed Carpet Mills Arts District, is in a huge building that currently houses light manufacturers such as piano makers, furniture re-finishers, and set designers, according to media reports.

The proposal the City Council is considering would also allow up to 20 percent of the building to be used by art galleries and personal service providers, making it similar to Chelsea Markets in New York City, the lohud story said.
