WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Gina Norfleet said her family planned to take advantage of the limited homework teachers assigned her kids at George Washington Elementary School over the Thursday and Friday break.
"We usually don't receive homework on Friday nights, so tonight is our Friday this week. I'm assuming there's no homework -- just reading," said Norfleet, 37, while picking up her five-year-old and seven-year-old from school. "My sister is here hanging out with me and my three kids and we're talking about going to the Botanical Garden."
The White Plains Public School District will not be in session Thursday and Friday in honor of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year celebration. The holiday began at sundown Wednesday and ushers in the High Holy Days, where Jews traditionally seek repentance and focus on good deeds prior to Yom Kippur, a day of atonement.
Mia Guastella said the two days off are a welcome chance to relax.
"Mr. Monti was kind enough not to give us any homework," said Mia, a fifth grader, whose family may go to Montauk, N.Y. over the break.
