TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner called for an investigation into Tuesday's collapse of a crane that resulted in the closure of the Tappan Zee Bridge in both directions for nearly six hours.
Tuesday's accident, as reported here by Daily Voice, is the latest in a series of construction and Hudson River barge mishaps that have drawn increased attention to the multi-billion dollar project linking Rockland and Westchester counties.
The Westchester County Office of Emergency Management issued an advisory saying: "Expect extensive delays and consider alternate routes. . . .The Tappan Zee Bridge is expected to be closed through the evening."
There were a few minor injuries, according to Greenburgh's police chief. It could have been much worse, Feiner added, saying, "We were lucky there were no fatalities or serious injuries. A miracle!"
Tarrytown police had closed down onramps to the bridge. Meanwhile, Greenburgh police department sent tech rescue teams and Emergency Medical Services teams to the scene and "we will be monitoring traffic backup problems," Feiner said.
Feiner called for a review of bridge construction safety oversight procedures, saying: "Motorists shouldn’t have to worry about their safety when crossing the bridge during a construction project."
Tuesday's accident highlights the need to not only review safety initiatives at the Tappan Zee Bridge, but safety on all bridge construction, Feiner said, including the Ashford Avenue Bridge -- a Westchester County project in Ardsley and Dobbs Ferry.
