Manfred joins National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell of Bronxville and recently named National Basketball Association Commissioner Adam Silver, who grew up in Rye, as the Big Three. National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman lives in not-to-faraway Queens.
Manfred, 55, spent 15 years as executive vice president for Major League's Economics and League Affairs and served as MLB’s Chief Opperating Officer before taking over for Bud Selig as the league’s 10th commissioner on Aug. 14.
Manfred is a native of upstate Rome and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1976. He Manfred attended Le Moyne College then graduated from Cornell University and Harvard Law School.
Goodell, who turned 55 in February 2014,? is a longtime Bronxville resident. He was chosen to succeed Paul Tagliabue as NFL commissioner and took office on Aug, 8, 2006. He was born in upstate New York.
Goodell was involved in the negotiation of the collective bargaining agreement with the NFL-Players Association and NFL owners during the summer of 2011. He has overseen league expansion, realignment, and stadium development and the advent of the NFL Television Network.
Silver, who is 52, replaced longtime
NBA Commissioner David Stern in February 2014. He was born and raised in Rye and graduated from Rye High School. He went on to Duke University and worked as a legislative aide in the U.S. Congress from 1984 to 1985.He earned a law degree from the University of Chicago in 1988.
Silver began his NBA career in 1992 and has held the positions of special assistant to the commissioner, NBA chief of staff, senior vice president of NBA Entertainment, and president of NBA Entertainment over his 22-year career.
