IRVINGTON, N.Y. Irvington's Marley Giddins is a nonstop athletic machine, moving from basketball in the winter, where she has helped the Irvington girls' basketball team to three straight state titles, to spring track and field, where she is a top competitor in four events.
Giddins moved from event to event with ease Monday as the Bulldogs competed in League II-C championships at Irvington High School. She won in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet even and placed second in both the 100-meter dash and the long jump, with a mark of 16 feet, 4 inches.
Basketball keeps me in shape for track because both sports depend on agility and running, Giddins said after placing first in the high jump and second in the 100-meter dash, before heading to the triple jump events. As an athlete, I take the same approach to basketball and track. Of course, theres no wind and its not cold in the gym, so track can be a bigger challenge.
Giddins was a three-year starter for the Bulldogs vaunted basketball team, which ran three straight Class C and B titles and two consecutive Federation championships as the state's best Class B girls team among public, parochial, private and New York City teams. She is headed for Amherst College in the fall.
I guess Ill take a little time to relax before heading to Amherst, Giddins said, as she took a breath after winning Monday's high jump. I'll be getting a training program from Amherst and get going on that to prepare for the basketball season. Track the jumping, especially has helped me become a better basketball player. It's helped my jumping ability, thats for sure.
