Tarrytown Participates In Hour Of Code

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Tarrytown's three elementary schools -- John Paulding, WL Morse and Washington Irving -- recently took part in "Hour of Code" activities in celebration of Computer Science Education Week.

Students from three local elementary schools recently took part in the "Hour of Code" that teaches students how to code. This student works at Washington Irving Elementary School.

During the "hour" student learned computer programming skills along with tens of millions of students around the world in more than 180 countries.

Using online resources provided by Hour of Code, Tarrytown's students coded online games and moved their characters through mazes and puzzles while learning how to code.

The district's technology specialist, Jean O'Brien, provided quick and fun tutorials for students built around fun games like "Star Wars", "Minecraft", Disney's "Frozen", and "Angry Birds".

The Hour of Code is organized by Code.org, a public non-profit dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color.

An unprecedented coalition of partners have come together to support the Hour of Code, — including Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the College Board.
