Student Artists, Musicians Show Talents in Sleepy Hollow

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – It was a night of art and music for students and parents in the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns.

Families gathered at Sleepy Hollow High School for two separate events: Jazz in the Courtyard and the senior art show. High school seniors displayed their work outside of the auditorium where jazz performers showcased their talents.

Art teacher Kristen Dreher helped organize the art show, which was the culmination of students' high school art careers.

“It ranges from classes that Gary Benton may have taught with sculptures to Angela Langston who does digital media and digital images,” Dreher said. “Most of the students are enrolled in the portfolio seminar class.”

The art show included aspiring fashion designers and artists, as well as students who consider art a hobby.

“For many of them this year, it was just a passion,” Langston said. “Any one of them could have definitely been accepted into an art school, but for them it was more of an outlet for creativity.”

Student musicians performed jazz pieces in the auditorium to a large group of parents. Performances included the Washington Irving Elementary School Stage Band, the Sleepy Hollow Stage Band, the Sleepy Hollow Jazz Combo and the Sleepy Hollow Jazz Band. The jazz band earned second place honors at this year's annual Sleepy Hollow Jazz Festival.
