TARRYTOWN, N.Y. For a few eighth-grade students at Sleepy Hollow Middle School, the opportunity to collaborate on an art project with members of the Tarrytown Seniors was fun and enlightening.
Eighth-grader Lucianny Rodriguez told the seniors during a presentation that she wondered whether they would enjoy talking with students. Fellow classmate Renata Morales said they did and eventually became just another group of classmates.
Not only did our new friends show up, but they had something important to share and to say, she said.
A triptych, or series of three collages, was unveiled Tuesday afternoon at the Tarrytown Senior Center. Art students gathered to thank their co-artists for their participation and to encourage more seniors to take part in the intergenerational project next year.
Francis Pace-Nunez is one of the eighth-graders. He came up with the idea of showing various stages in people's lives. Pace-Nunez said the rest of his class helped to figure out how to tell the story and make it great.
Tarrytown resident Anna Zambelli helped art teacher Andrea Harrison get the project going, but said she wasn't able to work on this year's project as much as she wished to. Zambelli hopes the next project will bring out more seniors.
Superintendent Howard Smith praised the project for giving students the chance to work with another generation of residents.
Too many of our children don't have enough opportunities to spend time with some of our senior citizens and learn from them the way kids used to do, he said.
