Irvington No. 79 in Newsweek High School Rankings

IRVINGTON, N.Y. – New high school rankings released by Newsweek magazine this week put Irvington High School at No. 79 nationwide and No. 17 in the Northeast region.

Newsweek calculated their scores using a variety of factors gathered from school officials in a survey. More than 2,300 schools completed the survey out of 15,000, according to Newsweek.

“This year, our ranking highlights the best 1,000 public high schools in the nation -- the ones that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads,” Newsweek said in its interactive chart.

"It’s always nice to recognized, particularly with such a well-known and well-established ranking," Irvington High School Principal Scott Mosenthal said. "But I’m always a little wary of attaching too much importance to a survey which measures only a few of the many aspects that occur in all schools. Having said that, I’d rather be on the list than not!"

High school rankings are based on six components: a school's graduation rate; college matriculation rate; Advanced Placement tests or International Baccalaureate tests taken per student; SAT and ACT scores; AP or IB scores; and AP courses offered per student.

Irvington High School students had a 99 percent graduation rate, with 98 percent of students attending a college. Students had an average SAT score of 1737 and an average ACT score of 25.3.

Irvington High School saw students taking an average of 1 AP test and scoring an average of 3.7.
