Irvington Fourth-Graders Learn Indian Lore At Ward Pound Ridge Reservation

IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Irvington School District fourth-graders visited the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation and participated in an interactive educational program, Indian Lore.

The program focused on the lives of the Lenape, and how these local Eastern Woodland Indians lived during the period of first contact with the European settlers.

Staff naturalists discussed and demonstrated the three key aspects of Lenape life: the hunting, gathering, and farming of food sources; the use of stone, wood, bone and other natural materials for tool manufacturing; and the games and toys and leisure activities of the Lenape people. Students and faculty also experienced village life in the Museum's traditional wigwam.
