The eight students that received the honor were Madison DeRose, Adrian Knowler, Alexander Mattei, Jack Nienaltow, William Shefelman, Colin Sherman, Trevor Sherman and Joanna Yuelys.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized this year.
Five other Irvington seniors qualified as 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists. Anna Canning, Emily Friedman, Julia Marshall, Tobias Schwed and Kyle Tunis all qualified by being the highest scoring test takers in New York on the taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half will win a National Merit Scholarship.
Sara Scott was named among National Achievement Program Outstanding Participants Referred to Colleges. There were roughly 3,100 students in this category that scored in the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 Black Americans who requested consideration in the 2014 National Achievement Program when they took the qualifying test.
