TARRYTOWN, N.Y. A call to a Tarrytown resident quickly turned suspicious when the caller tried to get the woman's utility bill account number, police said.
The Hendrick Lane resident reported on Sept. 19 that someone called saying legislation had been passed to help seniors lower their utility bills. When the caller asked for her account number, the woman questioned why it was needed and the caller hung up.
The woman called the number back, but found it was out of service, police said.
Police also reported the following items:
- Firefighters discovered that heavy smoke on the Tappan Zee Bridge around 8 a.m. on Sept. 20 had been caused by welders working under the bridge.
- A Union Avenue resident reported a raccoon had gotten inside his house around 2 a.m. on Sept. 20.
- An Altamont Avenue resident reported on Sept. 19 that his identity had been stolen and almost $60 had been taken from his bank account.
- A large tree fell on a South Broadway building during heavy storms on Sept. 18.
- A man was taken to the Westchester Medical Center around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 17 after threatening to commit suicide at McDonald's.
- Firefighters watered down several piles of mulch on the Old Croton Aqueduct around 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 17 after someone reported a possible brush fire in the park near the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Martling Avenue.
- An injured coyote was spotted several times near Hitachi on Prospect Avenue on Sept. 16 and 18. Police noticed the coyote had a broken rear leg and were advised by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to let nature take its course.
