IRVINGTON, N.Y. Jerome J. Murtha, a lifelong resident of Irvington, died Aug. 18 at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Yonkers. He was 79.
Murtha had recently been working on the transcription of an oral history of Irvington that he previously completed.
He was born July 13, 1933, in Tarrytown Hospital to Matthew J. and Daisy Foley Murtha. His father served as the last president and first mayor of Irvington, from 1925 to 1931 and 1935 to 1939.
Murtha graduated from Immaculate Conception School and Irvington High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He went on to major in history at the State University of New York at Albany.
He worked for Anaconda Wire and Cable Company for many years. Murtha then joined the Westchester County Department of Social Services. He was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Irvington, volunteering in many fundraising efforts, including Catholic Charities Fund drives.
Murtha served as an officer of the Irvington Democratic Party. Beyond his local commitment, Murtha was passionate about the New York Yankees, politics, transportation, statistics, and singing and listening to music.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Virginia Cuff, Genevieve Murtha and Adelaide Rebsch; and a brother, Matthew J. Murtha. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church. Dwyer and Vanderbilt Funeral Home handled arrangements.
