Breaking News: New Details Released After Fiery Fatal Head-On Greenburgh Crash

Charles Turner Bates, 82, Of Irvington, Retired CBS Secretary

IRVINGTON, N.Y. - Charles Turner Bates of Irvington, and Clinton, Conn., died Aug. 1. He was 82.

Bates was born in Tarrytown, to Harry Cole and Helen Turner Bates. He attended Hackley School in Tarrytown and graduated from Hamilton College in 1953. After college he served two years in the U.S. Army's Ordnance Corps, serving as a translator in France.

He graduated from Yale Law School in 1958, and began his legal career at Townley and Updike in N.Y. He joined the law department at CBS in 1969, rising to the level of secretary of CBS.

Upon retiring in 1988, he embarked on a second career, teaching high school level U.S. History at his alma mater, Hackley.

He volunteered at the Irvington Historical Society and The Church of St. Barnabas, where he was a lifelong member.

Bates is survived by his brother, Robert P. Turner of Weston, Conn.; and eight nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, David and Harry Bates.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15 at St. Barnabas, 15 N. Broadway, Irvington.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bates’ memory to Hackley School or The Church of St. Barnabas, Irvington.
