Tenure Granted to Five Tarrytown Teachers

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Five teachers were honored recently by the Union Free School District of the Tarrytowns for receiving tenure during the past semester at a mid-year ceremony.

“We'd also like to congratulate all of our members who have received tenure,” Ellen Kaplan said. Kaplan is head of the teachers' association. “We're very, very proud of you—of course, we didn't expect anything less.”

Sunny Ahn, Alexa Gonzalez, Christopher Lopez, Lisa Sorrenti and Cheryl Tucci each received tenure during the past year. Superintendent Howard Smith said the district chose to recognize the teachers during its January Board of Education meeting instead of the traditional end-of-year ceremony because it didn't want them to get lost in the shuffle of the academic year.

School board members had to briefly stop the ceremony and vote on Sorrenti's tenure status before honoring her. The motion passed unanimously.

“Ok, you can exhale now and enjoy the night,” Smith said.

Sorrenti thanked officials for granting her tenure.

“I've had a wonderful experience so far and I've learned so much,” she said. “I'm really looking forward to more years.”

Gonzalez thanked students and fellow teachers for making it a joy to work at Washington Irving Intermediate School every day. Lopez and Tucci also thanked school officials for allowing them to work in the district.

Gonzalez is an elementary teacher. Lopez and Tucci are teaching assistants.

Ahn is also a teaching assistant.

“It's been an honor and a privilege to be a part of the district,” she said. “I love my work because each and every day, I witness the changes that are made in the lives of our students.”
