TARRYTOWN, N.Y. - Laura Ferrari, a first-grade teacher at Winifred L. Morse Elementary, had never read The Squeaky Door until sitting down in front of a group of small children restless with anticipation for her to begin reading to them. She quickly found that she loved the childrens book.
I always ask the librarian to show me books that Ive never read before because I love increasing my library in my classroom, Ferrari said Thursday. She always points me to the newer publications that use sounds, which I like to do.
Ferrari encouraged the children at the Warner Library to take part in the reading by making kissing sounds and animal noises to accompany the book, which is about a grandmother who tries to comfort her grandsons fear of his squeaky bedroom door by bringing him different animals to sleep with.
The children, mostly younger than eight, laughed as they got caught up in the story and Ferraris insistence they provide a soundtrack to the book. Some couldnt contain their excitement whenever they got to make a sound.
The event was part of the Tarrytown Teachers Telling Tales program at Warner Library. The summer program has school teachers, principals and administrators volunteering to read to children each Thursday from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. during the summer. The program will continue through August 18.
Rebecca Almogabar also had the group entertained. Almogabar is an English as a second language teacher at John Paulding School and she read her favorite books. One of the things she liked best about the story time was watching them enjoy the story.
The two teachers received an email asking if they had time to volunteer, Almogabar said. Many other teachers will be taking part in the summer program. The program is something to volunteer and keep the kids interested, Ferrari said.
Many of the children also come to see their former teachers.
They feel attachment to their former teachers and they come just as a way of seeing them, Ferrari said. Because kids miss their teachers and teachers miss their kids.
