Tarrytown Schools Offer Retirement Incentives

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – The Union Free School District of the Tarrytowns has seen a build-up of retirement-age teachers at a time when they're facing “untold contraints and potential reductions in staff,” Superintendent Howard Smith told the Board of Education at a recent meeting.

In an effort to get some of those teachers to retire, the school district is now offering incentives to teachers who submit a letter of resignation for purposes of retiring on or before February 1, 2012 for an effective date of no later than June 30, 2012 or June 30, 2013.

“We felt it was in the best interest for the district to create an incentive for teachers who are eligible to retire to give serious thought to retiring,” Smith said.

Smith noted that last year's faculty of 250 saw only one retirement, although many teachers are eligible to retire and would ordinarily be retiring.

The retirement incentives are also being applied to members of the CESA No. 1 and No. 2 units and assistant teaching staff as well.

Smith said the district had a “strong tradition” of treating employees equally, so they “wanted to extend this to the other bargaining units as well.”
