TARRYTOWN, N.Y. Memorial Day isn't just the end of a three-day weekend. That's what Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow officials echoed during Monday morning's ceremony honoring those who have served our country in the military.
"There is real meaning to this day and thank you so much for being out here and remembering that," Sleepy Hollow Mayor Ken Wray said.
More than 100 people gathered on the northeast corner of Patriots Park for the annual Memorial Day Service. Many others lined the streets of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow to watch their friends and family march in the annual parade.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion sponsored the day's service, planting flags in front of the war memorials for each war in America's history after the Civil War. The Sleepy Hollow Middle-High School Band performed patriotic songs, and a 21-gun salute was given toward the end of the ceremony.
Sleepy Hollow resident Armando "Chick" Galella and other veterans also unveiled a new Gold Star Mothers memorial at the site to honor mothers who have lost sons in war.
Tarrytown Mayor Drew Fixell gave thanks for the weather, which was bright and sunny. He also encouraged residents to remember that Memorial Day is a time of thanking and honoring.
"Ultimately it's a day of remembering," he said. "What is most important is we are honoring and thanking those that gave their lives and that we remember when we leave from here what sacrifice they made."
Friends and family can go home and enjoy themselves because others gave their lives in war, Fixell said. He said he was heartened to see the crowd at the service.
