TARRYTOWN, N.Y. The Tarrytown Music Hall is getting a little work done this summer.
Executive Director Bjorn Olsson said the changes, mostly structural in nature, should help reduce noise, improve drainage and give patrons a taste of what the building will look like after a full renovation.
We don't know what the final bill will be yet, but we will be spending several hundreds of thousands of dollars on these improvements, he said.
The improvements, expected to be finished next month, are paid for in part by several grants, including a $400,000 grant from the New York State Parks Department. A total renovation of the 127-year-old structure will cost an estimated $1.2 million. The Music Hall is still in the fundraising stage for that work.
Olsson said they're replacing wooden beams on the back wall and adding concrete support to the foundation. The back wall will get ia face lift, which he notes will brighten up Kaldenberg Place. Drainage lines are also being created in the back alley, Olsson said.
Right now there is virtually no drainage, and every heavy rainfall threatens to flood the theater and do damage, he said.
Music Hall neighbors also should see less noise coming from the building. Olsson said they're planning to replace the exit doors, which will provide better soundproofing.
More than $100,000 has been used to improve the hall's production capacity, with LED lights that work without traditional color filters while using less energy.
Patrons will also get a glimpse of what's to come with the full renovation as staff will restore one ceiling plaster to its former glory.
We wanted to make sure patrons see improvements on the inside as well, and we think people will get very excited when they see what an amazing difference historic restoration can make, Olsson said.
