Tarrytown May Change Parking Near Train Station

 

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Metro North commuters may soon find that almost-unrestricted parking along Division Street in Tarrytown is gone as the village upgrades its McKeel Avenue parking lot in the spring.

 

The parking lot upgrades include the installation of a parking pay station, which would replace the parking meters currently in use. The extra meters would be reformatted and moved to Division Street.

 

“Division Street is a place where a lot of people are going to the train and avoiding paying for a permit or using other longer meters,” Village Administrator Michael Blau said during Wednesday's board of trustees work session. “So the thought was to legislate in this area and then when we're ready to move the meters, we just move them.”

 

Plans call for a 12-hour parking meter zone to be created on Division Street from the intersection of the northwest leg of the H-Bridge to the village line on both sides.

 

Tarrytown Police Chief Scott Brown noted in an email to Blau that area businesses do not use the street parking and that public works employees use a lot behind the village department’s garage. Although there would be minimal costs associated with the meter re-programming and installation, he said “it might be feasible to create meter parking along both sides of Division Street.”

 

“We have the meters, we might as well put them to use,” Scott wrote. “There is no reason we should be providing free parking for these individuals.”
