TARRYTOWN, N.Y. The promise of free candy will lure many trick or treaters out of the house Monday, but village officials urge extra caution because of the lingering damage from Saturday's snowstorm.
Due to the snow storm on Saturday, there is snow along the curbs, branches and tree limbs along the curbs and sidewalks and wires down, Tarrytown posted on its website.
If there are live electrical wires down, trick or treaters will not be allowed in the area, the village said. Power outages also mean that some areas will not have street lights. The village noted debris or the snow may cause people to trip and asked for extra caution.
Hopefully, a little extra vigilance will assure a Happy Halloween for everyone, the village said.
Irvington Police Chief Michael Cerone also urged caution when trick or treating.
"There are still unsafe conditions of downed power lines and broken tree limbs and branches located throughout the village and surrounding areas, which have still not been cleared," he said. "These sites and locations are indicated by being taped or coned off and should not be approached at all.
"We are also recommending not to trick or treat in areas where there are no street lights or where power has not been restored. Lastly, we encourage everyone to do their trick or treating as early as possible and to also be aware of Con Edison and work crews in the area."
Irvington cancelled its Halloween Parade, but announced Monday that the Irvington Volunteer Fire Department would be giving out candy and hot chocolate for trick or treaters from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Irvington Firehouse. Musical entertainment will be provided by Parker Reilly's Band.
Con Edison reported that 811 customers in Tarrytown and 320 customers in Irvington are still without power as of Monday afternoon. Full power is expected to be restored by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday.
Both Tarrytown and Irvington announced warming shelters for residents. Irvington's warming center is located at the Irvington Senior Center in Scenic Hudson Park until 6 p.m. The shelter could be opened longer, if needed.
Tarrytown has set up a warming center at the Tarrytown Senior Center, located at 240 West Main St., for residents who do not have electricity and want a place to be warm and sleep. The shelter will close at 10 p.m. if no one comes.
