TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- The Tappan Zee Bridge visual quality panel has issued its first recommendation based on public input.

The new Tappan Zee Bridge is expected to be completed in 2018.

The panel has chosen the angled, chamfered main span towers after more than 200 public comments. Officials say the design was preferred by a margin of three to one.

The design option does not change the bridge's structure but could increase the price slightly, officials said. The $3.9 billion bridge is expected to be completed in 2018.

“Gov. [Andrew] Cuomo has made it clear that transparency and public input must play a key role in the construction of the New New York Bridge,” said VQP Chairman Brian Conybeare. “The success of this process has reinforced that the VQP is essential in both achieving this goal and giving Hudson Valley residents a bridge they can be proud of.”
