TARRYTOWN, N.Y. Winter recess doesn't have to be a week-long TV or video game marathon for your kids. There's plenty to do around the Tarrytowns that will keep them occupied during the school holidays.
Week-Long Camps
Several area organizations are putting on special day camps during winter recess. The Stone Barns Center is offering a Farm Camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for kids in grades kindergarten through fifth. The JCC on the Hudson has several mini-camps for future thespians, special needs kids and kids aged 5 to 12.
Visit the Local Library
Check out a good book or DVD to pass the time. Warner Library is putting on several events for kids and parents alike, including a musical show by Robert the Guitar Guy and an introduction to classical Chinese dance. Visit the library's website for more information.
The Irvington Public Library will host events for a variety of ages, including a games afternoon for teens, Robert the Guitar Guy for kids and Pirate School for ages 4 and up. Visit the library's website for more information.
Discover Nature
Parks, such as the Rockefeller State Park Preserve in Mount Pleasant and the Peter Oley Trailway System in the Irvington Woods, offer residents the chance to hike and explore area history. The Irvington Woods are home to the Hermit's Grave, the only known grave site within the village.
Take a Metro North Day Trip
A day trip to New York City can be fun and informational, but why not take the train upstate and explore the cities and towns further north on the Hudson Line? The train's views of the Hudson River will also be sure to entertain kids throughout the journey.
Learn Some Local History
The Rivertowns area is a popular tourist destination because of its history. Why not spend a day learning about it? The Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow Historical Society is open from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. A special Civil War exhibit marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
The Irvington Historical Society is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays and Saturdays. The current exhibit features stories of the Brothers Grimm and Washington Irving.
Perhaps you'd rather discover history outside a museum? The Daily Tarrytown compiled a map of historical sites in the Tarrytowns that deal with the Revolutionary War. Pick and day, hop in your car and set off time-traveling back to the days of George Washington.
