Sleepy Hollow to Hold Hearing on GM Property

The Sleepy Hollow Board of Trustees will hold its last public hearing tonight at 7 p.m. at Village Hall on the GM property.

The General Motors Corporation is seeking a special permit for the site of its former automotive assembly plant at 199 Beekman Avenue. The site is approximately 94.5 acres.

Sleepy Hollow Village Administrator Anthony Giaccio explained although the board has had several public hearings before, “the board wanted a little more comment.”

Giaccio said the board has heard from 30 or 40 people about the issue already, so he wasn’t sure if the board would hear more comments.

The hearing comes after the Village of Tarrytown filed a lawsuit with the Village of Sleepy Hollow and General Motors in New York State’s Supreme Court over the GM property on May 24, alleging that the development would hurt its downtown business district and create traffic issues for the area.

Real estate developers are seeking to build a development known as “Lighthouse Landing,” which would include residential, retail, dining and public space for the site, which sits along the Hudson River. A New Jersey-based company, Roseland Property, originally wanted to develop the site in 2003. After five years of negotiating and getting approval for the site, Roseland has pulled out from the project.

The GM property has been empty since 1996, when General Motors closed and disassembled its assembly plant.
