TARRYTOWN, N.Y. Tarrytown resident Sylvia D. Freyler died Monday at the age of 97. Freyler, a former resident of Sleepy Hollow, was one of the founders of the Sleepy Hollow Seniors and the groups first president.
Freyler was the one that started the organization and got the seniors together and involved in the community, said Sleepy Hollow Seniors President Mario DiFelice. Freyler worked with then-Mayor James F. Galgano to start the Sleepy Hollow Seniors (then the North Tarrytown Senior Citizens) in 1975. The seniors didnt have their own building, so they met at Holy Cross Hall. Today, the group has 145 members and a new building of their own.
Sleepy Hollow Seniors Vice President Irene Armato said she had nothing but good things to say about Freyler. The two lived across the street from each other when Armato first got married, and their children went to school together.
She was a lovely, lovely lady, Armato said.
Coffey Funeral Home will host a visitation for Freyler on Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., which will follow with a funeral mass at Transfiguration Church. Freyler will be interred at Sleepy Hollow Cemetary.
Freyler was born in Ridgewood, N.Y. on June 15, 1914 to George D. and Alice M. Marin Duquette. A graduate of Washington Irving High School, she married Charles E. Freyler, Jr. at St. Agnes Church in Manhattan.
Freyler was also involved with the parent-teacher association at St. Teresas, the Historical Society, the Sleepy Hollow Society and at Phelps Memorial Hospital, where she volunteered.
Freyler is survived by two sons, Charles E. Freyler, III of Florida and George M. Freyler of New Hampshire; her sister, Marjorie D. McCurdie; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Freyler was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, who died in 2000; sons Dennis and David Freyler; daughter Janice Busher; and sister Alice D. Croke.
