Sleepy Hollow Senior Named National Merit Semi-Finalist

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Sleepy Hollow High School senior Catherine Lillis said it can get hard to manage school and extracurricular activities.

In addition to academic work, Lillis is involved with the Environmental Club, the orchestra and volleyball. Lillis said she likes to make sure there's a balance.

Recently, Lillis was also named a National Merit Semi-Finalist.

“It's nice,” Lillis said. “I wasn't really expecting anything.”

Approximately 16,000 students nationwide qualified as National Merit Semi-Finalists in September. That number is approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers on the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test. About 15,000 students will advance to National Merit Finalist status in February.

Lillis said after graduation, she'll be heading off to college. She's not sure where she's going yet. Right now, she's in the midst of the application process.

Lillis credited her teachers at Sleepy Hollow High School for a great education.

“I'd say that almost all my teachers at Sleepy Hollow have been really supportive and really great in that way,” she said.

For students seeking their own title of National Merit Semi-Finalist, Lillis had one piece of advice.

“I guess I'd say they'd have to work really hard in school, but having a balance of school and non-school activities is really important for keeping sane,” she said.
