Sleepy Hollow Says Come To Postal Service Meeting

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Sleepy Hollow has scheduled a public meeting with the U.S. Postal Service for Thursday, and village officials are encouraging residents to attend the meeting in show of support for the Sleepy Hollow Post Office.

“There is strength in numbers,” Trustee Karin Wompa said. The meeting will take place at 6:15 p.m. at Village Hall in the firehouse conference room. The adjacent boardroom will be open for kids. Wompa said she'd bring her Spongebob Squarepants DVD so that parents could attend the meeting.

Sleepy Hollow's post office was one of 3,653 post office branches, stations and offices across the nation placed on a list for possible closure in July. The U.S. Postal is studying whether or not those branches will stay open.

Sleepy Hollow officials and residents have been outraged at the decision and began efforts to save the post office. Wompa said they had collected more than 2,500 petition signatures. Mayor Ken Wray and the Board of Trustees have also written letters to the Postal Service and elected officials.

“I'm hoping many residents from Sleepy Hollow will come and show their support. I think it's really important to our village,” Wompa said, later adding “I think it'd be sad thing to see our post office close.”
