Sleepy Hollow Praises Crew After Water Main Break

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Sleepy Hollow Mayor Ken Wray thanked employees in the Department of Public Works for their quick action on a recent water main break during Tuesday's Board of Trustees meeting.

“I think the guys did a great job and the fact that most of us didn't notice it: this is why we have those guys,” he said. “It's another example of how much we count on them and how much they come through time and time again.”

The main broke early Sunday morning on Sleepy Hollow Road. General Foreman Richard Gross said village employees worked quickly to figure out where the problem was and fixed them.

Workers found three breaks: one in an existing main and two in a newly-installed main. Gross said the department is working to determine which came first: the chicken or the egg. He said workers are unaware of whether the newly-installed main broke first, causing the old main to follow, or whether it was the other way around.

The village was back to maximum capacity at 7 p.m. on Sunday evening, Gross said.

Everything happened the way you'd want it to happen, except for the break in the first place,” said Wray. He noted village employees were quick to respond and had no hesitation in waking up village engineers and the contractor to diagnose the problem.

Wray noted that the village kept a water conservation alert up for several days after the main was fixed so that village employees could test out repairs and make sure things weren't going to fall apart again.
