SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. A $37,000 grant from the New York State Department of State has been awarded to Sleepy Hollow to study how a pier on the Castle Oil site can be converted to public use.
We are very excited to get this grant and it comes at the perfect time, Village Administrator Anthony Giaccio said.
The grant is part of the recently-announced $67 million that the state has given to the Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development Council. More than $38 million will be going to projects in Westchester in the hopes it will stipulate economic growth and create jobs.
A proposed plan to redevelop the Castle Oil site comes before the Planning Board this month and includes the pier being donated over to the village, Giaccio said. The Castle Oil site sits beside Horan's Landing and near the former General Motors site.
The $37,000 grant will be used for schematic designs and cost estimates of the Horseman's Pier project. Giaccio said the designs and cost estimates will help the village figure out how to convert the pier into a public-use facility.
The grant will also help the village apply for future grants for the pier, Giaccio said.
Village officials hope the pier will be used for fishing and mooring of small watercrafts.
The grant requires a 50 percent match from the village, according to village grant writer Fiona Hodgson. Hodgson has said previously that the donation of the pier could be used as part of the village's matching funds.
