Police Looking For Tappan Zee Bridge Jumper

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- State police say they are looking for a man who apparently jumped off the Tappan Zee Bridge just before 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Several people have jumped off the bridge in 2011, including a couple in August who jumped off the bridge naked and holding hands.

A Rockland County resident also used the bridge to protest Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef  and the Rockland County Board of Legislators in November.

In total so far in 2011, three suicides have been reported, according the the New York State Thruway Authority. There were six incidents, involving seven people. Some suicide attempts were thwarted in the process.

Tappan Zee Bridge officials have implemented several measures in recent years to dissuade distressed people from jumping, including placing cellular-based phones connected to a suicide hotline along the bridge and training bridge staff in suicide prevention. Suicide fencing and traffic cameras have also been installed along the bridge.

Police had requested air assistance to locate the jumper's body, but high winds have prevented it.
